My Child Knows Arabic Letters but Struggles to Join Them

Find the missing step

Tell the teacher whether the child names letters, recognises them in different positions or reads short combinations. A repeated error can be a useful clue. Do not label it as a lack of effort before checking the task and explanation.

Work with a small pattern

Ask the tutor to choose a small example, model it and let the learner repeat. Return to a familiar pattern before introducing another one. Parents should use the teacher’s example rather than inventing pronunciation from transliteration.

Recognise progress beyond page count

Less prompting, recognising the same form in a new example and correcting a familiar mistake are useful signs. Let the child explain or demonstrate a small part so you can see understanding rather than only repetition.
